The Island of Tioman is the main centre along
with 9 other islands in the Marine Reserve, especially selected
for the great diversity of reef life so abundant in this clear
water zone. Often 20 to 30 metres
visibility shows off the turtles, rays, myriad of reef fish and
the exquisite coral reefs. Napoleon wrasse and bumphead
parrotfish are some of the larger aquatic specimens.
The scenic beauty is undenied, it was the
location of the classic film 'South Pacific' and island hopping
is preferable way to enjoy the whole area. The remoter islands
of Aur and Pemanggil have many dive sites and are extremely
undeveloped.
The islets NW of Tioman are uninhabited and some have beautiful
white sandy beaches with coral fringing reefs for excellent
snorkeling and great diving.
To the west is the uninhabited
pair of islands Suribat and Sembaling with a shallow coral
filled channel between them for snorkelling and a mangrove
forest filled with small waterways. A few miles south is a dozen
small islands with stunning beaches and scenery and 2 have small
hotels - Rawa and Kechil. An hours sail south again reveals
Tinggi Islands beauty both above and below the water.
Ashore
Tioman's wildlife includes the protected binturong, mouse deer,
macaque, slow loris and even the brush tailed porcupine along
with a host of reptiles. The life style is relaxed with feet
in the sand restaurants at some locations and rustic
villages such as Air Batang just steps back in time.
Tioman is already marine
orientated as the steep shoreline precludes road connections to
many villages which can only be reached by regular ferry
services or water taxis

The
coastline of granite boulders spotted with coconut palms is very
typical as are the small deserted beaches found dotted all along
the coast. Whilst offshore the jumble of boulders form rocky
outcrops where corals and many fish make it their home. Good for
both snorkeling and diving.
