The Archipelago of Mergui is the
ultimate explorers paradise. Hundreds of islands forming the coastal to region
of Myanmar (formerly Burma) are mostly uninhabited and those that do have people ashore are mainly sea gypsies with a fishing background.
It is the ultimate in exploration sailing.
Arriving in the southernmost town of Kaw Thaung one first
experiences the different culture of the people within this
bustling waterfront town speckled with temples.

An incredible variety of islands to explore, possibly starting
with Barwell Island and its crystal clear waters evokes images
of what may be in store. Eagles are common about the uninhabited
islands and close quarters feeding is possible, a remarkable
sight indeed.
Cavern Island and its obvious attraction of caves and the
nearby Bada Group, some 25 islands on a shallow bank with reefs
surrounding nearly all of them. Interestingly named Cat and
Kitten Islands and Naked Island - they just beg for a visit.
Further north is Swinton Island with excellent
diving, on close by coral encrusted rocky islets, and long deserted beaches- making it a great stop over
en-route to Lampi Island, the second largest in the Archipelago.
Several
rivers (creeks) extend some miles inland with steep jungle sides
virtually impenetrable. Many species of mangrove grow along the
waters edge as the creek gradually but relentlessly narrows to
but a stream.
Further north the hook of Lampi has a deep,
narrow but navigable channel of exceptional
scenic beauty, a fabulous overnight anchorage for a whole days
worth of explorations.
Longer range trips can include Domel Island, similarly encrusted with
wildlife and the beaches fringed by jungle hinterland are
impressive by any standard. A short excursion finds any number
of diving and snorkeling sites, most will be a new experience as
the area has yet to be mapped by underwater enthusiasts.
Nearly every day has a new island to visit some only a few hours apart.
Calm seas, perfect anchorages and remoteness really characterises
Mergui.
Snorkeling No Name Island's entire perimeter
may take a while but this without doubt merits the effort.

The formations above water line of many outer
lying islets give clues to the diving and snorkeling
possibilities that can be anticipated.
